Our Mission
Abled Hawaii Artists (AHA) is a volunteer- based organization aimed at raising community awareness of disability issues in the state of Hawaii.
AHA organizes an annual event that is the only celebration of the American’s with Disabilities Act on Hawai’i Island and promotes inclusion through a festival that focuses on individual abilities through the arts.
The AHA- art festival also works to build community through the creation of a mural symbolizing the great things that can be achieved if we work together. Our theme this year is “ Transcending Obstacles ”. It is befitting, during this time of world crisis that we move beyond our own obstacles- fear, greed- by being selfless. Be of service to others and you become part of the change you want the world to be….
The Big Island Planning Committee is comprised of persons with and without disabilities who value the importance of community inclusion.
The Vision of AHA – Big Island
For the past four years, Mar Ortaleza, AHA-Big Island Chair, has had the wonderful opportunity to assist a multi-gold winning Special Olympian share his love of “taking pictures” with others! Working together in creating a micro-business, organizing yearly solo and collaborative shows in Pahoa and a variety of group shows, Mar was inspired to establish an art festival to provide equal opportunity for other artists with disabilities.
