I am available to help in planning your next trip to Hawai’i Island. I can research accessibility and photograph sites to which you would like to go. Recently there have been major advances in accessible places especially on the Big Island. Call or email me for tips on coming to HAWAII!!
Since moving to the “Orchid Island” in February of 2007, I have had the opportunity to drive to many fantastic locations. You too can visit many accessible places and activities. This photo was taken on my first dip into Hilo Bay in front of the Hilo Bay Hotel. Also, I have been swimming with my fins in the open ocean several times.
In September, I was able to go paddling in a canoe on Keahou Bay and surfing at Kahaluu Beach. The event was free, and sponsored by Full Life, a nonprofit organization serving people with physical and developmental disabilities. They had the participation of the lifeguard instructors and local businesses to have paddling in the morning, a BBQ with dancing on the beach during lunch, then surfing in the afternoon. I got a room at the Sheraton Keahou Bay Resort the night before because I live 2 hours from the Kona side if the island. I had a great time on the ocean at a very well run, safe and fun event.
Of course things cost a little more here but I’ve found free or low-cost and accessible activities at the Hilo Zoo, Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Liliokulani Ocean Front Japanese Garden Park, self-guided driving tours as well as other selected events throughout the year.
